The Vascular Surgery Residency Program of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Methodist is a two year program designed to prepare vascular surgeons to provide personalized, comprehensive, and the highest quality surgical care and leads to eligibility for the Certificate of Special Added Qualifications in Vascular Surgery. The program provides the educational resources appropriate for the development of proficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the arterial, venous, and lymphatic systems and the clinical educational experiences for the resident to excel in multidisciplinary communication and professionalism. Two residents are accepted annually through the National Residency Matching Program.

The program is recruiting for two positions outside the match with a start date of July 1, 2010.

The goal of the vascular training program is to provide residents with a broad base of knowledge and skills in all aspects of vascular surgery concerning the preoperative, operative, and postoperative care of the general vascular surgery patient. Residents will be proficient and knowledgeable in the indications and the technical skills to perform procedures requiring traditional open and catheter-based technology.

In order to qualify for the Residency in Vascular Surgery, a resident must have successfully completed five (5) years of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency program and must be eligible for examination by the American Board of Surgery.

The Vascular Surgery Scientist Training Program at Northwestern University -- a two-year mentored research training experience for residents in general and vascular surgery (PGY-3 and -4) funded by a T32 grant from NIH -- is an individualized training plan developed by the mentor and trainee. The T32 mechanism provides a stipend, tuition, fees for coursework, travel funds, and health insurance. Trainees may select one of several tracks of study or a combination of tracks: Vascular biology with a basic science emphasis, clinical research including outcomes studies, biomedical devices, or an integrated program designed by the trainee and his/her mentors. If interested, trainees may also complete the requirements for the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation degree program. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply.

The Division of Vascular Surgery at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center has an unexpected opening for a vascular fellow starting July 1, 2009. This two-year ACGME-approved program, functioning since the 1960s, is dedicated to producing well-rounded vascular surgeons who will be comfortable with both endovascular and open surgery, vascular laboratory evaluation, advanced imaging modalities and clinical research.

The trainee will perform an adequate number of open and endovascular procedures, participate in several clinical trials and gain experience in urban and suburban outpatient settings, as well as dedicated endovascular suites. The two fellows rotate to two large teaching hospitals, one in Newark and one in a nearby suburb. The lovely communities surrounding Newark provide suitable opportunities for family life and recreational and cultural activities.
